A luna moth, collected locally around The Pas in 1950. The luna moth is one of the largest moths in North America; this specimen’s total wing span is 10.5 x 11 cm. The four eyespots on its wings are to confuse potential predators. Luna moths have a very brief adult life – they only live about 1 week! Sam Waller was an ardent naturalist, and his natural history collection included an entomology collection with specimens from around the world.
