It may look like a hand revolver, but in fact this is a long stemmed novelty pipe.  When held correctly, the butt of the gun faces upward with the pipe bowl in the butt of the gun.  The mouthpiece is at the tip of the gun barrel.  The face of the gun is engraved with swirling vines that have been filled with beige paint.  The top of the metal piece on the hilt has been engraved with a scallop pattern. The original display tag from Sam Waller’s Little Northern Museum for long stemmed pipes read: “EUROPEAN PIPES. These long stemmed pipes were in use on the continent years ago, when long whiskers were the vogue, and the bowl had to be lit far from the face to prevent singed whiskers.  Some are hand painted.  Others have the owner’s initial.  Some of these came from Poland, Ukraine, Czechoslovakia, Belgium, and Germany.  There are some similar ones in the collection from Innsbruck, Austria, Monte Carlo, and France.”
